Research Context
Pinealon is the synthetic tripeptide L-glutamyl-L-aspartyl-L-arginine (Glu-Asp-Arg, commonly abbreviated EDR). It is one of the short peptide bioregulators that came out of research in St Petersburg, Russia, from the 1990s onward, the same line of work that produced the tetrapeptide AEDG. The approach there was to reduce a tissue-derived peptide preparation to a single short sequence with a defined identity, so that later work had a characterised compound to use rather than a mixture.
Preclinical studies have examined EDR in cultured neuronal models, including work on gene expression and cell survival.
Chemistry & Structural Modification
Pinealon is a short linear peptide with a free N-terminal amine and a free C-terminal carboxylic acid (H-Glu-Asp-Arg-OH). It is unmodified: no protecting groups, no lipidation, no cyclisation. All three residues are standard L-amino acids. The molecule carries acidic and basic groups at the same time: the glutamic acid and aspartic acid side chains each bear a free carboxyl, while the arginine side chain carries a guanidinium group that stays protonated across the usual working pH range.

Lyophilisation & Stability
Pinealon is supplied as a lyophilised white powder. Lyophilisation removes residual moisture that would otherwise promote slow peptide-bond hydrolysis during long-term storage. The sequence contains none of the residues most prone to oxidation (cysteine, methionine and tryptophan), so cold, dry storage is a general precaution here rather than a response to a known weak point.

Store lyophilised vial at 2 to 8°C, protected from light. (Long-term storage at −20°C is standard practice.)
